Between 10 AM and noon on weekdays, after the I-35/MoPac commute rush clears.
After ACL Fest at Zilker Park, walk north to Barton Springs Road or east to South Lamar before requesting — the Zilker exits are gridlocked and surge priced, but prices drop significantly two blocks away.
Downtown, East Austin (East 6th corridor), and the UT campus area have the best driver density. South Congress and South Lamar are well-covered. North Austin (Domain area) has decent coverage. Way south past Slaughter Lane and the far suburbs like Pflugerville and Cedar Park have fewer drivers.
CapMetro runs the Red Line commuter rail from downtown to Leander and a solid bus network. MetroBike has 75+ stations across downtown, UT campus, and East Austin. Electric scooters from Lime and Bird are everywhere.
A rideshare from AUS to downtown runs $15-$25. Airport parking is $8/day economy. The CapMetro bus Route 20 runs from the airport to downtown for $1.25, though it takes 40 minutes.
Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) rideshare pickup is on the lower level in the designated rideshare zone. Follow the green "Rideshare" signs from baggage claim. The airport is only 8 miles southeast of downtown, so rides are typically $15-$25.
Austin is the most event-volatile rideshare market in the US, and it's not close. Our data shows that SXSW (March) creates 10+ consecutive days of elevated pricing across the entire city — the longest sustained surge event we track in any market. During SXSW, average ride costs increase 60-80% citywide, and downtown-to-downtown rides that normally cost $8-$12 can hit $25-$35. Outside of events, Austin is a bargain: both Uber ($0.93/mile) and Lyft ($0.93/mile) charge identical per-mile rates — one of only three indexed cities where the two are exactly matched. The base fares are also tied at $1.00. This means there is essentially no pricing difference between the two apps in Austin during non-surge periods, which is unusual. Austin's transit situation compounds rideshare dependence: CapMetro is limited, the Route 20 airport bus takes 40 minutes, and there is no rail connection to the airport. The result is that Austin riders are more captive to rideshare than almost any other major tech city. Our recommendation for Austin: during SXSW and ACL, budget 2x the normal rideshare cost or use the free SXSW shuttle system.
