Uber and Lyft use surge (dynamic) pricing during high-demand periods. The table below shows typical surge multipliers for Chicago by time of day. A 1.5x multiplier means your fare is 50% higher than the standard rate.

Midday between 11 AM and 1 PM on weekdays, avoiding both commute surges and the post-work bar crowd.
After events at the United Center, walk east to Halsted Street or south to Madison before requesting — the immediate arena zone surges 2-3x but prices normalize within four blocks.
The Loop, River North, and Wicker Park have the highest driver concentration and sub-3-minute wait times. Lincoln Park and Lakeview are also well-served. The South Side and far West Side have significantly fewer drivers, with wait times often exceeding 10 minutes.
The CTA "L" system is extensive, running 24/7 on the Red and Blue Lines. The Blue Line runs express to O'Hare for $5. Divvy bike-share has 600+ stations and is excellent for lakefront and downtown trips.
A rideshare from O'Hare to downtown runs $35-$55, while the Blue Line is $5 and takes about 45 minutes. Monthly CTA passes cost $75 — roughly the price of three downtown rideshare trips.
At O'Hare, rideshare pickup is on the upper level of the main parking garage (follow "Rideshare Pickup" signs from baggage claim). At Midway, the pickup area is on the arrivals level outside Door 4. Both airports add $5 to every ride.
Chicago illustrates why per-mile rates alone don't tell the full story. Lyft's base fare ($1.53) and per-mile rate ($0.97) are both lower than Uber's ($1.70 base, $1.03/mile), making Lyft the clear winner on paper. But Chicago's winter weather creates a unique dynamic: during heavy snow events, Uber's larger driver fleet means shorter wait times, while Lyft's smaller pool leads to longer ETAs and higher effective surge. Our rate data shows the O'Hare-to-downtown corridor is the most price-volatile route in the Midwest — the $35-$55 range can expand to $60-$90 during holiday travel peaks. The CTA Blue Line at $5 is objectively the best value for this route, but it takes 45 minutes vs. 25-35 by car. Chicago is also one of the few markets where the per-minute rate matters significantly: winter traffic on Lake Shore Drive can double trip duration, adding $8-$15 in time-based charges that riders don't anticipate.
